The Scoop on Black Mountain Trail:
The difficult rating on this trail is definitely accurate. Before setting out, I was questioning whether 2.2 miles would enough, however was pleasantly surprised by the near-constant incline from the parking lot to the peak. This one definitely qualifies as a “butt blaster.”
The ascent begins almost immediately once you leave the parking lot. Walk about a quarter of a mile up a paved road until you reach the Black Mountain trailhead. This is where the grade becomes a little bit more intense, and it doesn’t let up until you reach the peak.
Once you reach the summit, your hard work is rewarded with sweeping views of Cave Creek and a surprise American Flag waving in the wind. You’ll be happy to spend a little time at the top taking in the expansive views below. Since the flag is no longer a surprise, I’ll let you read what’s written on the plaque once you get to the top.
The trailhead is located at N. Schoolhouse Road. Get directions using the link here.
