Boulder Canyon Trail is, without question, one of my top three favorite trails in the Phoenix metro(ish) area. When people ask for hiking recommendations in Arizona, this is the first one that comes out of my mouth. It’s not particularly challenging, but the views are extraordinary. My recommendation has been validated more than a couple of times.

Parking for the trailhead is in the same lot as the Canyon Lake Marina and campground. If you have time before or after the hike, I would also highly recommend renting a jet ski and taking it back deeper into the lake. Similar to this hike, Canyon Lake is my favorite in AZ. I hope I’m not building this up too much.

Anyway, park at the marina, cross the street and head up the Boulder Canyon trailhead where you’ll begin your gradual climb up a beautiful overlook of Canyon Lake as well as your first real views overlooking La Barge and Boulder Canyons with Weaver’s Needle poking in from a distance. I’m not sure that I will ever tire of this view, but move along we must.

From here, you’ll climb a bit more to reach the highest point in this hike: Frog Peak. The views remain spectacular, and the trail begins to descend for the duration – that is, until you turn around. Remember the old adage: what goes down, must come up. Something like that.

Saguaro cactus dot the hills along the trail with a few massive rock slides mixed in along the way. You’ll also notice Battleship Mountain up ahead for a large portion of the hike. Continue walking until you reach the creek bed. This is a great turn-around point for day hikers.

I really can’t wait to hear what you think of this one. Please comment here or send me a message on Instagram @oasistrekkers.
